A Keyframe of Mind Archive

A Keyframe of Mind is a podcast about the game industry and life as a developer. Join your hosts, animators Jenny, Ju Li, Katie, and Esther, as they discuss topics ranging from best practices in animation, navigating the industry, and the never-ending journey to improve and grow personal creativity. Many of the episodes have unfortunately been lost to time, but see below for all of the KoM content we were able to salvage in our website update: A little about the hosts:

Jenny: Animator, scary carnivorous plant enthusiast. They’re pretty cool, confirmed by science. Skynet compatible. Butts. Food.

Ju Li: Asian by birth, Geek by nature, 3D Animator by trade. Cosplays sometimes, is odd at all times.

Katie: Animator. Mocap Janitor. Chalk Artist. Bird Lady.

Esther: Taiwanese animator. French fry aficionado. Traveler. Lover of bad puns and guilty dog videos. Participation-award-winning karaoke league participant.

Episode 1

In this episode we introduce ourselves and reveal our deepest darkest secrets - that is to say why each of us got into animation and game development, how we survived our first days as animators for games, applicable life skills we learned outside of game dev, and what keeps us excited and learning even when in-engine compression wrecks our animations over and over.

EPISODE 2

In this episode, we start our two-part discussion about arts education. We all took different educational paths to get started in our careers, and there were definitive pros and cons to each of our personal experiences. How did we stay motivated when stressed over classwork? What would we do differently if we went back? Did our schools prepare us for getting an actual job? And seriously, which version of Pokemon Sun/Moon are we all playing?

Episode 3

In this episode, we get into part two of our discussion on education. Over time, we’ve individually explored a wide variety of self-education options, and we spend this episode getting into the nitty gritty of our experiences with each option. We also go over many accessible animation resources, the impact of our studies on our careers, as well as create enough oddly motivational quotes to fill an odd, motivational calendar.

EPISODE 9

Keyframe of Mind - Inbetweens Episode 1: Real Reel Tips

In this episode, Esther drops 15 minutes of real reel tips on everything from cutting down unnecessary shots, to spending time on your reel where it counts, to exactly what you should ask when requesting a reel critique. And to make it as easy listening as possible, the entire episode is accompanied by some suuuuper relaxing music (in an attempt to exude the chillest vibes possible in these stressful times)!
